Backup Client Software Review
Online Backup service requires a service website and an online backup client.
In our review of online backup services, some websites tout "no need to install
any client software". If so, they really don't offer Online Backup service!
Uploading files using a web browser is not considered online backup. We have
also noticed some websites offer drag-n-drop uploader client software, which is
closer to a real online backup service. However, Backup usually means automatic,
scheduled backup with predefined tasks.
- DriveHQ Online Backup client (highly recommended): Main features include:
Intuitive and professionally-designed user interface; supports real-time and scheduled backup tasks; create multiple tasks; supports HTTPS/SSL; supports data encryption; supports upload/download resuming;
supports data compression for faster uploading/downloading; supports file versioning;
can backup files being used (support shadow copy); backup Outlook emails; support
multiple PCs and group accounts for business users.
- Mozy Online Backup: (Recommended) Automatic online backup, can backup open locked files;
private key encryption; byte-level differential backups; 30-day file version archives;
bandwidth throttling; in-windows restore, etc.
- Carbonite online backup:
Some users might like it, as the main selling point is simple. It has much fewer features than
DriveHQ or Mozy, and it is much less flexible than any other real backup software. The Carbonite design is
set and forget and backup your PCs automatically, which is nice; but in reality I won't recommend it as
it is simply not efficient and doesn't allow any advanced options.
- XDrive Desktop: Simple, intuitive, integrated with other XDrive service.
Supports automatic, scheduled backup. XDrive used to be the most famous online storage company. But
lacking a business model and acquired by AOL have seriously affected the service and software quality.
- FilesAnywhere: Supports automatic scheduled online backup;
supports data encryption; supports data compression. Overall, FilesAnywhere client seems to have a lot
of features; however, it is not well organized and integrated. The folks at FilesAnywhere must be all geeks
without considering user experience.
